Beauty Post #001: Tata Harper Skin Care

REDEFINING HOW YOU CARE FOR YOUR DERMIS (BAHAHAHA... I SAID "DERMIS" - I'M A 4 YEAR OLD)

A little bit of background on this whole beauty thing...

Some of you may know that my business background is in the fashion industry (in NYC - oy vey).  During my tenure on the business side of fashion, I was pampered excessively (I mean -- there has to be some perk to working with mean women at pitiful pay, right?).  I went to fashion shows, was given free clothes, and, most importantly, was exposed to an incomparable beauty education.  You see, the company I worked for was gearing up to launch beauty products so they brought in all of the potential luxury label vendors to give us free product and teach us all about what makes them special.  The experience was unforgettable, and truthfully, the #1 takeaway from three years of staring at runway clothing I'd never be able to afford.  I learned that what you put on your body matters.

Enough about me.  On to the product.  I chose to feature Tata Harper first not just because that's the skincare line I use (and just so you know, they didn't send me free product or anything to write this review).  I chose to feature her because it is the best product out there.  I have no intention of getting GOOP on you (no offense, Gwyneth!).  Yes, this product holds sticker shock value but it will likely be the most expensive thing I ever share with you.  And I'm doing it on purpose.  I think I might be able to convince you of it's worth.

Cleansers and moisturizers... the world tells us that we must use them.  The problem with standard cleansers and moisturizers?  The ingredients in 98% (a guesstimate, mind you) of all cleansers are used to strip your face away of everything - all of the healthy oils your face creates to keep your skin shiny and fresh...gone.  Then, the moisturizers are bulked up and heavy with all sorts of plant cells (which are too big for your pores to absorb) with a bit of H2O (re: A LOT of H2O) to try and help your face regain some of that nourishment which ends up feeling greasy.  Ever experience something like that?  Thought so.

Tata Harper has a different approach.  This from her "About" section:

1

100% Natural & Non-Toxic Ingredients 100% of the time

Synthetic ingredients and potentially toxic chemicals have no place in the products we use on our skin every day. Not only are naturally derived ingredients better for our health, but since they are biocompatible with our skin, they can deliver stunning results! We are committed to using natural and nontoxic ingredients for health and for the results they deliver, not so that we can advertise ourselves as “green” for marketing purposes.

2

We Are Our Own Manufacturers

Owning the research, development and production process from start to finish ensures high quality every step of the way. We manufacture in small batches in our Vermont laboratory so that our products are as fresh as possible when they get to your doorstep. Most competitors outsource the manufacturing of their products to cut costs but we love producing them ourselves, and believe that the process is part of the pleasure of creation.

3

One-of-a-Kind Formulas

Our products were developed from scratch by Tata and a team of industry experts. Our formulas contain no generic fillers or premade bases – every ingredient has a specific purpose and delivers targeted results.

4

Concentrated Formulas

We pack between 9 and 29 active ingredients in every bottle! Most cosmetic formulas contain between 1 and 3 active ingredients. Multiactive formulas result in multifunctioning products – which means you only buy one powerful product, not 6.

5

World’s Most Advanced Natural Skincare Technology

Our formulas are developed using the most advanced natural skincare technology available on the globe. We work with chemists, biologists, botanists and integrated medicine practitioners all over the world to stay on top of the latest natural ingredient discoveries, extraction techniques and preservation technologies so that we can bring you the most effective products available in the natural skincare market.

6

Environmentally Sustainable Business Practices

We believe that businesses should take responsibility for the environmental repercussions of their actions, so we strive to be as eco-friendly as possible! We buy renewable energy from the state of VT to run our facilities, we buy recycled paper and packaging material, we use recycleable glass bottles for our products and we keep all activity in one place to cut down on our carbon footprint. We believe that if companies talk the talk, they should walk the walk – no greenwashing!

Each one of these points support our Paleo philosophy - using local, sustainable resources to maximize our nourishment without having to resort to fillers that are non-compatible with our biochemistry.

And just in case you need a specific anecdote - here's my n=1.

I never had horrible skin growing up.  I never had great skin, either.  I was that teenager that was always plagued by 1 or 2 really bad pimples (usually on my chin).  But it didn't end when I became an adult.  I thought as I got older that my skin would clear up and I'd be left with a silky, shiny face free from any blemishes, because that's what the world told me would happen with age.  Well, the world lied. One year ago, I still had zits like a teenager.  Anything would make it worse.  I so much as looked at milk or touched my face - instant breakout (yes, I know there's controversy over milk... but I swear it affected my skin when I was on a SAD diet).  Plus I was doing a basic regimen - Cetaphil for a cleanser and Cera Ve as a moisture - both over-the-counter, mild, and "doctor recommended."  I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong.  Enter Tata Harper.  Equipped with the cleanser, the toner, and the moisturizer thanks to the beauty clinic I attended, my face changed.  It was immediate.  The cleanser cleansed my face (OMG!) leaving my skin feeling soft and dewy - not dry and rubbery.  The toner hydrated and gave my complexion an even tone (OMG!) - redness be gone.  The moisturizer moisturized (OMG!) and brightened my skin without leaving it feeling greasy.  I was flabbergasted.  And I promptly walked out of my apartment... now this is important...WITHOUT A LICK OF MAKE-UP for the first time since I was a toddler, let's be real.  It was life changing for me.  It's been almost a year since I started using Tata Harper products and I've tried a sample here and there of her competition, but ultimately, I haven't found anything that comes close.

And then... the ultimate test: international travel.  Who has a tough time on a long-ass flight keeping your face equally moisturized and non-greasy and then has to contend with the elements of your new terrain whence you land?  EVERYONE who travels internationally, obviously.  And it's the worst, am I right?  You can't decide what to do!  Do you moisturize?  Do you cleanse... again?  Won't that make your skin even drier, more sensitive?  But if you don't, won't you breakout??  OMG... THE ANXIETY.  And then you land.  You get a woosh of local air and then everything changes.  Your anxiety only gets worse and you're left shaking for a shower like a drug addict to a fix.  Tata Harper, my friends, passed the international travel test.  When I got off a 10 hour flight from cold weather to mild and watery weather, my face was as fresh as when I'd cleansed and buffed it that very morning.  Shower?  What?  Waste of time!  Let's explore the exotic locale.  It was remarkable.  I'm a lifer.

Now comes the question - what do I use exactly and how long does it last?

Well, for now, I only use the cleanser, the toner, and the moisturizer.  I find that the products are worth their money because it goes a very long way.  They might tell you that the products are only meant to last 1-2 months, but my experience has been entirely different.  I stretch it out way past 4 months every time which makes the cost of the product far more manageable if you consider what you spend month to month on taking care of yourself.  I also own the mask, the body oil, and the serum.  About once a month, I take the time to pamper myself - take a bath and put on the mask.  It's lovely, but not necessary.  I also use the body oil after shaving my legs - I find that it keeps them hyper moisturized in a great way (plus I love the smell).

But the serum I gave to my mom.  It's important to note that anything Tata calls "regenerating" or "repairative" has collagen in it which for the most part means "for a matured woman only" (by mature I mean 30-35 yrs...).  I don't have wrinkles just yet, so I'm still on a preventative track rather than a maintenance track.  I use the rebuilding moisturizer instead of the repairative because my body still naturally produces collagen - no need to spend the extra money on something your body does already anyway, y'know?

So that takes me back to 3 products.  Which means, I only added 1 extra step to my daily routine -- spritzing my face with a toner... how time consuming! (Sarcasm, for those who might need clarification).  And here are a couple of options to get you started.

1.  You can buy the Deluxe Beauty Set  which has 1 of everything you need and then some for $65.  The set lasted me about 3 weeks with daily and nightly use.

2. You can call for samples at the cost of shipping ($5)
  • Can you send samples of your product for me to try?
Yes, we will happily send 2-4one-time use samples for a $5 flat shipping rate
anywhere in the Continental US. Orders for these samples can be placed via
phone at 1-877-321-8282, Mon-Fri 9-5 pm EST. These samples are great to
get an initial idea of scent and feel and skin compatibility.

And that is Tata Harper.  Did I convince you? Please comment!
